Ask the Passionistas and they'll probably tell you they're the best band in the world. "They play the way 'musicians' can't," wrote Kelley Stoltz the very first time he ever saw the Passionistas live. He meant it as a compliment, hitting on just what it is that makes this San Francisco band so engaging. The strength of the band lies very much in the confidence and passion with which they play. The Passionistas live show can veer from energetic punk to the avant garde. There's a self-imposed lack of discipline in their playing style that makes it so interesting - as if they're playing each song for the very first time. Their debut God's Boat - produced by Stoltz - retains this same spontaneous energy.

Comparisons to Television Personalities and Gravy Train have been made - but you'd be more likely to find Gwen Stefani, Beyonce and Lil Wayne on each member's respective iPods. With the release date looming, the band is spending less time practicing and more time painting, recording rap mixtapes and starring in a series of popular YouTube videos, while letting their label boss document their every move. Their sound may resemble obscure garage rock bands of the past, but their recording philosophy and internet-savvy ways may just make them the band of the future.

The third episode of the Passionistas' podcast introduces bassist Andrew Lux. While Lux considers himself to be a "quiet observer" within the band, he has nonetheless helped to define exactly what the Passionistas are all about. Lux and his artistic talents are featured in this episode - he, Aaron and Myles all recall some of the band's early, more eventful shows.

The individuality factor must somehow be increased. You sure have the potential for that, but I think you must grow up to dare more. Not necessarily in the arrangements and style, which are quite original, or try to head in that direction. But more in the sense of songwriting, harmonies and all that mental stuff. Otherwise you might find it difficult to convince the listeners and record buyers that you are THE act to freak about.
